Guides · Thesis-Based Selling

What is a sales thesis?

A thesis is a belief about how the world works, written down and defended. In a sale, it is the belief the buyer's decision rests on.

The short answer

A sales thesis is one plain sentence about how the buyer's world works, which someone could disagree with, which stays true whoever wins the deal, and which says what would prove it wrong. The seller lays it down, the buyer attacks it, and the decision is built on what survives.

The definition

So in this book, a thesis is the foundational belief that a decision rests on: set down, agreed on and built on. For a seller, that definition is practical, not academic. If you can name the belief your buyer's decision rests on, you know what the deal is really about. If you cannot, you are answering questions without knowing what they are for.

The word is Greek. Thesis means a placing, a setting down, from a verb that means to put or to place. A thesis is a belief you set down where other people can see it. That matters more than it sounds. A belief that stays in someone's head cannot be agreed with, argued with or built on. Once it is set down, a room can look at it together.

Three tests

When you have a candidate, a sentence you think might be a thesis, run it through three tests before you take it into a room. Think of them as a screen. A sentence that fails any one of them is something else: a slogan, a pitch, a requirement or a guess.

  1. Someone reasonable could disagree with it. "AI will change every industry" fails, because no one in the meeting will argue. "Within two years you will swap the AI model under your application at least once" passes. A person can say no to that, and then you have a conversation.
  2. It stays true whoever wins the deal, and whatever product is chosen. A thesis describes the world, not your product. Read the sentence as if you worked for your competitor. If it stops being true, it was a pitch.
  3. It names what would prove it wrong. The philosopher Karl Popper drew the line between science and everything else here: a real claim tells you what evidence would sink it.
LUTHER, 1517 THE DOCTORATE THE INVESTOR numbered, public, signed defended out loud commits to a future A THESIS a claim about the world that you write down, sign and agree to defend
Three traditions, one working definition.

Six checks before it meets a customer

Put the three tests and the three demands of the room together, and you have six checks for any thesis before it goes in front of a customer. The workbook's Write it down page carries them.

  1. Someone in the room could say no to it.
  2. It is true no matter who wins the deal: no product name, and it survives being read by a competitor.
  3. It names what would prove it wrong, and that evidence is something a person could observe.
  4. Something follows from it: if the buyer agrees, a plan changes.
  5. A tired executive can repeat it after one hearing: one sentence, plain words.
  6. It has a horizon and a signal to watch, and does not depend on this quarter's AI model.

Run all six on one thesis you hold today. Most first drafts pass the first two, fail the third because nothing would prove them wrong, and fail the sixth because they lean on what this year's AI model can do. Fix those two and the thesis is usually ready for the next chapter's work.

What a thesis is not

A thesis has near neighbors, and the book names seven. Each looks like a thesis from a distance and fails in the room.

Whose thesis it is

There are three layers: the vendor's thesis, which the seller inherits with the job; the buyer's theses, which they held before any vendor arrived; and the shared thesis.

The shared thesis. The short list both sides agree on, from which the decision follows. It is built in the deal, found and written together. It is the only layer the sale stands on.

A thesis is a claim someone in the room could say no to. If everyone would nod, keep sharpening it.
